September 2nd Meeting Minutes

In attendance:

Patrick, Dana, Andrew, Farra, Whitney, Jill, Daniel, Cecilia, Evvie, Manley, Rachel, Daniel, Alice, Melanie, Eric, Elena, Linda, Sophia,

Meeting Restructuring:

We Will be restructuring our meetings to have an organizational meeting separate from the general meeting. The general meeting will be held once a month in a classroom and will be advertised heavily. Organizational meetings will be held once a week to discuss organizational issues, obviously.

Committee Updates:

PR:

Tabling: A signup list for market Wednesday tabling was passed around.

Catalog: Delay due to accounting (bureaucratic bullshit) issues with UPS.

Radical Advertising: We need help making flyers for Radical Rush, promoting the dance party at The Engine Room. Patrick said he would write a press release for media contacts. We will screen print t shirts on Monday (September 6th),Whitney will make a FB group. Manley suggests contacting Limelight for coverage of Radical Rush. There will be flyers tomorrow in the office to spread across campus.

Activism:

Oct 7th: Promoting a walkout to protest the busting of teacher unions and budget cuts. Patrick and Manley suggest a protest on the Union Green with music and food to have a place to “hangout” during classroom walkouts. This is a national event so it should be big and handled seriously, separate meetings will be needed. It should also be viewed as a springboard for generating interest in CPE and the issues that concern us.

Meeting with Doctor Roy: Conference next Monday (September 13th) to discuss teacher unions and budget cuts. Dr. Roy is a prominent figure in the movement, and Patrick will send out emails with further information.

Events:

September 11th: No Quran burning in Gainesville. Convoy!

September 25th: DIY Festival in Gainesville. Convoy!

Late October/November: “South of the Border” viewing in association with the Hispanic Latino Student Union which also want to have a followup speaker to discuss the film and immigration rights

ESP Mushroom walk: Rachel mentioned that the walk will meet in HCB 207 at 1pm (Saturday September 11th). Proposal for small honorarium ($50) for the Mushroom walk lecturer approved, Patrick and Rachel will meet tomorrow to do paperwork.

Longterm Event Plans: Bill Ayers and the Beehive Collective

Dana mentioned a New Orleans’ protest against budget cuts which resulted in an altercation with the police. Perhaps this can be tied to our Day of Action plans.

Radical Rush Schedule:

Monday: Labor day! No events, but you should read about the great things that organized labor has won for us!

Tuesday: Organization Tabling on the Union Green

Wednesday: Know Your Rights Workshop

Thursday: CPE General Meeting!

Friday: CPE dance party at the Engine Room, 809 Railroad Ave

Saturday: ESP Wild Mushroom Walk

Sunday: Radical and Progressive Organization potluck and networking picnic.

Look up these events on facebook for further information.

USAS:

United Students Against Sweatshops: Nike, Russel, and Champion make FSU apparel. Most of their clothing is produced in China, Honduras, and India with child labor under harsh conditions. FSU permits these companies to produce clothing with the FSU logo. Only 1-3% of the price of a shirt goes to paying labor. Students created the Workers Right Consortium 10 years ago to monitor factories to insure collegiate apparel is not made under these harsh conditions. FSU is not affiliated with the WRC but is affiliated with the FLA. The FLA is a White House organization established to monitor these factories, but the FLA is monitored by the very same companies that utilize sweetshops to produce collegiate apparel.

Tactics for promoting USAS: President has complete control over the campus. To be a member of the FLA it costs $50,000, this is an absurd cost amid the current financial situation. Manley suggests tying in free speech zone demonstrations with the USAS. Farra suggests stickers on T-	shirts in the bookstore to raise awareness. Jill suggests flyering on campus. Dana suggests kids in timeout in various locations wearing informative shirts (timeout kids). Alaina mentioned UF’s tactic of cutting out T-shirt tags and placing them on a global map to give perspective to the exploited labor. Evvie mentions a need to offer alternatives to sweatshop clothing. Email cpeactivism@gmail if interested in participating on this issue. We will form an interest meeting to further discuss strategies. Stay tuned for an email from Farra.
